The Quinta das Lágrimas, composed of 29.6 acres of land, is one of Coimbra’s main attractions. It is a magical Public Interest Place full of history and hidden gems that you must get to know.
Although its origin is still shrouded in mystery, it is known that many centuries ago the Portuguese royal family used the place to hunt. The next owners of the land were the Universityof Coimbra and a religious order. In 1730, the estate was bought by the Osório de Castro Cabral family, who built the palace. The building was destroyed by a fire in 1879 and rebuilt in the following century.
The place is also home to the Fountain of Tears. According to the legend, it was in this place that the tragic love story of D. Inês de Castro came to an end. It was by this fountain that Prince D. Pedro’s lover was killed by mercenaries sent by the Portuguese King Afonso IV.
