Gil Vicente Academic Theater, the only university theater building.
The Gil Vicente Academic Theater, located in Praça da República, in the center of Coimbra, and belonging to the University of Coimbra, is one of the city’s landmarks and one of the places where locals and visitors know they can find culture and entertainment with cinema, theater or concert.
This theater was named after the first great Portuguese playwright and renowned poet. Gil Vicente is considered by many to be the father of Portuguese theater and even Iberian dramaturgy.
The work of this symbol of Portuguese culture, born in the year 1466, is seen as synonymous with the changing times, the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and the ability to criticize a society and its values through satire.
Designed originaly by the architects Alberto José Pessoa and João Abel Manta. In 1993, the building was renovated under the guidance of the architect André Santos.
This theater has a regular program in the performing arts, cinema and music. However, it offers its spaces for holding cultural and related events, including conferences, cultural product launches, company meetings, among others.
The Gil Vicente Academic Theater has a 768 seat auditorium (437 audience seats + 4 seats for reduced mobility and 327 counter seats).
Gil Vicente Academic Theater also has a coffee shop located at the top. This space, usually frequented by students, is a very spacious, pleasant and very bright room, with views over the Praça da República (Republic Square).
