Coimbra benefits, once again, with the initiative and entrepreneurial spirit of a young couple. Filipe and Rute open the doors of “Queijo – Cheese Restaurant”, number 92 on “Rua Direita”, and offer the city an innovative concept: a restaurant where the star of all the dishes is, as the name suggests, Cheese.
It’s a small but equally welcoming space, thought out in detail, in which the couple, together with their friend and Chef Gonçalo, propose two different gastronomic experiences: tasting menus or the fondue menu. If you opt for the first experience you can choose between a menu with two, five or seven moments. On the cheese fondue menu you can choose between pecorino tartufo or gruyére. Of the dishes included in the tasting menus, you can choose between fish or meat, always with the main element present – cheese – and these suggestions vary weekly.
What doesn’t vary is the amuse bouche, Nisa cheese bread with chorizo accompanied by homemade jam, and the desserts: chocolate cake with Roquefort cream that aims to “tease” palates and cookie cake with mascarpone, a more consensual suggestion.
If you just want to try some of the best cheeses, you can customize your own board or accept suggestions from Filipe and Gonçalo, who are experts on the subject. The wines, of course, are Portuguese, from all regions of the country… and all promise to pair well with the gastronomic experience you choose.
