Although the Jardim Botânico – Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra is younger than the city’s university, Coimbra’s most beautiful green space is already 243 years old. Located in the heart of the city, the garden was created in 1772 by the famous Marquês de Pombal, within the European expansion process that took place in the fifteenth century.
The area, with about 13 hectares, was originally donated to the city by Benedictine friars and transformed over the centuries, turning into the spectacular garden that you can visit today. In addition to the hundreds of natural species that inhabit the Botanical Garden, the area is also home to a rich fauna composed of several species of birds and brown squirrels.
Today, the garden not only welcomes tourists and locals on a daily basis, but also serves as a botanical school where children and adults can learn more about nature.
