Let’s start at the beginning… João Claro, a young computer engineer, was having fun at a Craft Beer Festival when he had the idea of organizing the same in Coimbra, a city with a rich beer heritage.
This is how the first edition of Brew! Coimbra happened in 2019 – Festival of Culture and New Brewing Trends, co-organized by the Municipality of Coimbra and the Science Exploratory.
“But, after all, what is the concept of the Brew! Coimbra?” During the three days that the Festival takes place, several national and international brewers meet outdoors by the river and next to the Science Exploratory. The access to the Festival is free and those who want to taste the beers (which vary between €2 and €4) have to buy just one reusable glass for €3 (2022 prices). And where there’s beer, there’s street food, lots of conviviality where entertainment is guaranteed with concerts, other cultural performances, debates and traditional games.
About 8,000 people from different generations went to the Brew! Festival Coimbra 2019. After two years of interregnum due to the pandemic, the second edition arrived in the city even more strongly in September 2022, surpassing the number of visitors of the first edition. The Festival attracts not only groups of friends but entire families who enjoy a “cool” family environment at the Brew!
The 2022 edition brought a novelty: the national beer contest “Ibeerian Awards”, which took place at “Coola Boola” in “Praça do Comércio”, with the presentation of the awarded beers, honoring and recognizing those who stand out in the production, passion and development of craft beer.
The Brew! Coimbra has already become a landmark of the city and there is no doubt that it will become a national and international reference.
