With the ambition of being a neighborhood restaurant, “Carolino” Restaurant, on “Rua Figueira da Foz”, uses, as its starting point, seasonal ingredients combined with the best that the Coimbra area has to offer: the rice is from Mondego River fields, the meat from the pasture in the riverside areas and the fish arrives from the near sea and the local river.
This brand new space was born from a “happy meeting” between Vítor Pereira, in charge of the kitchen, and Bruno Paiva, handling artisanal bread and pizzas with slow and natural fermentation. Both had the idea of creating a “casa de pasto” and have now realized it together.
On Carolino‘s menu, we find delicious proposals: “matured meat carpaccio with onion pickle” to start, followed by a creamy “seafood and fish carolino rice”, or any of the mature meats proposed and, finishing, with the dessert offerings that include “chef’s mother crème brûlée” and “Dona Laura’s sweet rice”.
Vítor and Bruno also offer lighter options, to enjoy at the table or at the counter: Sourdough Pizzas made with “the best” ingredients, “Bulhão Pato” clams and “Bolinhos de Bacalhau” (Cod Cakes). For all these options, a beer is recommended to pair. Why not? The wine cellar is made up of Portuguese wines but also some international and low-intervention wines, “full proof to pair the entire meal”.
The portrait of Vítor Pereira’s grandmother, proudly displayed at Carolino, is a homage to the harvesters involved in rice cultivation in Mondego as well as the “Tricanas of Coimbra” (the women who always carried a clay pitcher when they went to Mondego to fetch water).
Because Carolino offers what is “ours”, sharing it with you in the name, in well thought space and in the dishes prepared with tradition.
