An unforgettable experience you can’t miss.
“Casa Costa Lobo“, number 22 Rua dos Coutinhos, is more than a unique property.
During the XIX century, José de Sousa Gonzaga bought the building and other buildings around it, uniting them to have a large house for the whole family. What begins to make it special and unique is precisely the junction of 17th, 18th and 19th century buildings.
There is much to admire in this house: one renaissance arch, one stairway with hand-painted tiles from the XVIII century, manueline windows, windows with benches from the XVII century, interior gardens, and many stars in reference to Maria Estrela, José’s only daughter to whom this house was offered in dowry when she married a professor of the University of Coimbra, Francisco Miranda da Costa Lobo. The House has since remained in possession and usufruct of her descendants, as a family dwelling.
In a privileged area, the views over the city are superb: facing south to Sé Velha and University and to the west the Mondego river and Santa Clara.
Currently it is possible to visit and experience life in this superb family house, by appointment, and even share a breakfast or an afternoon tea with the family Costa Lobo. Well beyond a guided visit, all visitors become friends of the family, while they take part of this time-travel life-style experience in profound connection to Coimbra’s cultural identity.
