Hotel Oslo is joining the University of Coimbra to celebrate a very important occasion to the city: the 725º anniversary of its university. The celebration, which began on March 1st, runs until December 4th and the program couldn’t be any more eclectic.
The program, which celebrates the 725 years of one of the world’s oldest and most traditional universities, mixes theater, music, sports and much more. The institution and the city will be celebrating throughout 2015.
Celebrating the past while thinking about the future! 2015 is a special year for the University of Coimbra (UC). The institution, one of the oldest schools in Europe and in the world, celebrates 725 years and the celebration is inspired by the Portuguese-speaking world and globalization, two concepts that are especially important now that the UC is part of the UNESCO World Heritage group.
The program, which extends until December, includes more than 150 events organized by the university in partnership with 60 organizations. With such a comprehensive program, there are events that will please everyone: from theater to music, not to mention science, sport or dance.
“This year there is an almost paradoxical meeting between the old and the new, the past and the future. We are at the same time looking to the future, but with our inspiration and feet in the past,” said the university’s dean, João Gabriel Silva.
Although the program extends until December, May is a special month for the students and the university. Between the 8th and 15th May, the city receives the fun Queima das Fitas (Burning of the Ribbons), the largest student celebration in the country, but the celebratory program also includes other extremely interesting activities.
There is art and architecture on display in the Colégio das Artes (all month), science and history at the Museu da Ciência da University of Coimbra (all month) and painting in the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (until May 9) , always with free entry. The program also includes the initiative “Find the city – Meeting Point”, which runs until May 24th with specific activities.
Even if you already know the city and the university, this is a new opportunity to rediscover sites and monuments that will dazzle you every time. According to Clara Almeida Santos, vice-dean of the UC, this program offers “a different way of looking at a space that you’re invited to revisit.” Do not miss this opportunity!
