February is the month of Carnival: the festivities also arrive in Coimbra. “Carnaval Coimbra 2024” takes place on the weekend of the 11th and 12th of February, at “Praça do Comércio” Square. The 10th dedicates its program to children with DJ sets, a performance by the “Beco” group and a Parade from “Bloco do Beco” that will walk through the streets of our downtown, starting and ending at “Praça do Comércio”. The 11th is dedicated to Women and the program includes a Capoeira performance, several DJ Sets, a new parade from “Bloco do Beco” and a concert with Brazilian singer Adriana Ramalho with the special participation of Janine Mathias.
Just a few km from Coimbra, the Luso-Brazilian Carnival of Bairrada, in Mealhada, which has been taking place since 1971, promises a lot of joy and fun between the 3rd and 13th of February, highlighting the main Samba School’s Parades, on the 11th and 13th of February, during the day, and on the 12th, at night.
In Figueira da Foz, where Carnival is also celebrated with great enthusiasm, the party takes to the streets from the 9th to the 13th of February. This year, Figueira Carnival 2024 is proud to mark the country’s 50 years of Freedom with several initiatives with music, dance and revelry.
In the Schist Villages of Góis, “Entrudo” was lived in a simple way: they hid their faces with old clothes and objects or masks made from cork. This tradition was recovered more recently and has once again brought life to the streets of Schist Village “Aigra Nova” and neighboring villages. Thus, the XVIII Entrudo Race takes place on February 11th, starting at 8:30 am. The starting point is in “Aigra Nova” and they head towards “Pena”, “Cerdeira”, “Esporão” and “Ponto Satão”, accompanied by the Pipers of “Rainha Santa”. Other activities are planned for the afternoon, such as “Jogo do Pau”, “Burning of the Entrudo” and the Cork Mask Atelier.
