Where the colors and smells combine.
There are few special places such as this, where the colors and smells combine in a unique delightful spectacle. We are talking about Mercado Municipal D. Pedro, located in downtown Coimbra, which is divided over two floors. In the first one prevails the vegetable countertops and the butchers. In the second one, we can find the fishmonger, the fruit shops and the haberdashery. “Dona” Tina, who has been in the market for 50 years, inherited the vegetable countertop from her mother. While she talks about the atmosphere of the market, she does not let passers by unattended and keeps saying: ”Oh minha senhora não quer umas batatinhas?” (Madam, don´t you want some potatoes?) She confides there are several tourists who enjoy the visit to the market to take some olives and lupins for their way. In the top floor we can find “Dona” Linda, from the fruit shop Lindita with her smile and usual kindness, values that maintains in the traditional commerce. At 7 a.m., when the market opens, “Dona” Linda has the usual clients, who make the shopping to their bosses and during the afternoon, the university students also pass there. The tourists that pass there don´t resist Portuguese products. The cherries, according to her, are the most wanted fruit. In the fish section, the codfish is always searched by tourists. “Dona” Graça tells us that many tourists think that codfish is Portuguese. Well, it´s not. However it is the uniqueness of how it is preserved and cooked in Portugal that excites tourists, and there are some of them who dare to take codfish in their suitcase. A tip? Don´t let Mercado Municipal out of your route in Coimbra.
