Museu Nacional Machado de Castro – Coimbra

Visit the “Museu Nacional Machado de Castro” – integrated in the UNESCO World Heritage Area.

The “Museu Nacional Machado de Castro“, integrated in the area selected by UNESCO as World Heritage of the University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia, is an icon of the city.

It was an administrative, political and religious center in the modern age, since the eleventh century it was Christian temple, episcopal palace in the second half of the twelfth century and museum since 1911.

Today, the collections that we can admire in the Museum are reflections of the wealth of the church and its sponsorships such as sculpture, precious metals, ceramics, textiles, furniture and archeology, collections provided mostly of monasteries and convents abandoned by the diocese of Coimbra through the centuries. These collections represent the main artistic styles that dominated the Europe of the century XII to the century XVIII.

To top all of this, underneath the Museum, you can visit one of the most impressive constructions of the preserved Roman imperial era in Portugal: a big and monumental set of galleries intended sustained a huge square or a forum in the ancient city of Aeminium and still sustain the museum today.
The Museum also features the Restaurant Loggia, featuring a terrace with stunning views of Coimbra, the University and the Mondego River.
