The Praça do Comércio is one of the main squares in Coimbra’s historical center. This square, the same place where the Church of Santiago is located, hosts the city’s famous Antiques Fair every month. The church was built in the turn of the 12th century and it’s one of the most important Romanesque monuments in the city.
This was the same square that hosted the city market for centuries until 1867, when the Saint Peter’s Market – now called Market Dom Pedro V, in the Avenida Sá da Bandeira – was built.
However, the Praça do Comércio didn’t lose its commercial drive and it currently hosts one of the city’s most popular commercial events, which deeply resembles the old fairs and markets. The current Antiques Fair, which is held on the fourth Saturday of each month, is now the best place in the city to find antiques, stamps, books and other rarities.
