“Praia de Mira” – a beach of fisherman’s that still practices the “art-xávega”.
Approximately 50km from Coimbra, you will find the only beach in the world that received, for 30 consecutive years, the “Blue Flag”, a distinction based on the environmental quality of beaches. We are talking about “Praia de Mira”, a Beach of Fishermen, proudly remaining a fishing village to the present day. Moreover, Mira still practices the “art-xávega”, a centennial art. The boats leave the beach, face the waves and launch a net that gets into a conical shape in the ocean, surrounding shoals of fish. When they return to land, the fish is pulled onto the beach in a true spectacle of sustainable fishing. The fishermen leave at around 7am and at 10 o’clock the fish market is filled with fresh fish. The people of “Praia de Mira” are very proud of their coast: they say there is no cleaner sand, there is no more beautiful sea. The “Moinhos-de-Água” are also part of the history and landscape of the Village. In the past, the many watercourses and a regular flow, were vital for the production of flour. Although many have been replaced by electric grinders, there are some that insist on working and are part of a beautiful hiking and cycling trail named “Rota dos Moinhos“. If you have the opportunity, visit this Beach that is already a world reference.
