Fount of tears.
Do you know the love story between D. Pedro and D. Inês de Castro?
Part of this love story happened in Quinta das Lágrimas gardens, located on the opposite side of Mondego River. In general traits, D. Pedro was completely in love for D. Inês, one of the maids of his wife, D. Constança. They met each other secretly in Quinta das Lágrimas’ gardens, where also exists a fount of tears. The legend says that the reddish algae that grows up there resulted from the blood shed of D. Inês, when and where she was murdered by order of D. Pedro father´s, the king D. Afonso IV, who didn´t approve of the relationship.
The Quinta das Lágrimas gardens were created by Miguel Osório Cabral de Castro to be a plant museum, containing species of all over the world. The space is constituted by a forest area – used by the royal family to hunt-, sequoias, Judas trees, Palm trees from China, Cedars of Himalayas, an Australian fig tree, a magnificent south African continent Podocarpo, among some other amazing species.
We suggest a walk in this magical place and that you let yourself be dazzled by the peace and the tranquility which this beautiful garden provides.
