Riverwalk of Aeminium – New in Coimbra

Coimbra is changing. The construction work and renovations that are taking place have created new dynamic in the city and have enhanced not only the riverside area but also the downtown area and its traditional/local trade.

The recent “Passeio Ribeirinho de Aeminium” (Riverwalk of Aeminium), on the right bank of the river, between the “Santa Clara” bridge and the “Açude-Ponte” bridge, brings the city even closer to the Mondego River. After four years of intervention, the old degraded pavement, where cars circulated, and the unorganized parking gave way to a 1.3 km long sidewalk with a lane for pedestrians and bicycles and sitting stands that go down to the river. The conditions have been created for this to be another popular area for peaceful walks and bike rides. There are rest areas, some shades and restaurants strategically located close to future stops of the new Metrobus system will also be opening in the near future.

The sound of trains arriving at “Estação Nova” (central train station) contrast with the pleasant view of the left bank that has been gaining strength in the city: we are talking about “Santa Clara”, Saint Francis Convent and the University stadium.

With the Riverwalk of Aeminium, Coimbra gains even more privileged outdoor space that promotes socialization, contact with nature and a greater appreciation of that area of the city.
