Must visit in Coimbra.

The “Sala dos Capelos”, also known as “Sala Grande dos Atos”, located in the “Paço das Escolas”, is the main Room of the University of Coimbra and the place where the most important ceremonies of academic life take place. Going back in time, this room was the Throne Room, where the Cortes met and acclaimed D. João I as King of Portugal. Sincethe University was established in Coimbra in 1537, the room has been the stage for solemn academic ceremonies such as solemn doctorates,  Honoris Causa doctorate, the investiture of the rector and the Official Opening of the School Year . In this beautiful room you can find large canvases with portraits of the Kings of Portugal that preceded D. João IV of Portugal. The ceiling panels impresse with its largesse, and are considered one of the best pieces of the “brutesco” type. You can not be indifferent to the exotic wood grilles and the beautiful carpet tiles made in Lisbon. Next to the “Sala dos Capelos” you will find the Private Exam Room and the Weapons Room which were part of the Royal Wing of the Old Palace. The first was the place where the Monarchs stayed overnight and where the first meeting was held when the University was definitively transferred to Coimbra. The second room guards the arms of the former  Academic Real Guard, used in solemn academic ceremonies.
