The “Barca Serrana” was, in the 19th century and part of the XX century, the most efficient way to transport passengers and goods between Penacova and Coimbra or, if necessary, Figueira da Foz, on the Atlantic coast. A large part of the population of Penacova worked on boating and activities related to Rio and, currently, they have done their best to preserve the memory of Barca Serrana.
This typical boat, full of history, now returns to the city of Coimbra through the tourist attraction “Ó da Roda”. With a pier in the Parque Verde do Rio Mondego, on the right bank of the river, Barca Serrana is available from Tuesday to Sunday, in 50-minute trips. If you want a more complete experience, you can, by order and appointment, enjoy a snack with traditional cheeses, sausages, jam and bread while enjoying a sunset on the Mondego River.
This trip is always accompanied by a fun and friendly boatman. “Ó da Roda” aims to connect the city to the river, enabling travelers to enjoy and appreciate the cultural heritage of the city and Mondego while learning about the history of Barca Serrana, Rio Mondego and the connection between Coimbra and Penacova.
