Enchances the city’s cultural offer.
Inaugurated on 4 July 2020, Coimbra’s celebration day, the new Center for Contemporary Art in Coimbra showcases 193 works from the National Contemporary Art Collection, by Portuguese artists from various eras and generations.
Located in a building next to the “Arco da Almedina”, in the heart of the city, the Contemporary Art Center is the result of a work between the Coimbra City council and the Ministry of Culture and enhances the city’s cultural offer.
With works by renowned Portuguese artists, the second floor of the building captivates us with the unmistakable trait of Paula Rego and on the third floor Amadeo Souza-Cardoso, Mario Cesariny, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Julio Pomar and José de Guimarães (among others) make for a remarkable visit.
The Program of the Contemporary Art Center of Coimbra is characterized by several autonomous exhibitions that include works grouped by the same concept.
This center adds to the strong tradition of Coimbra on contemporary art, following the CAPC (Coimbra’s Circle of Plastic Arts), the oldest portuguese institution for Contemporary arts, founded in 1958 and the Contemporary Art Biennial Anozero.
