It was in 2009 that the “Colina de Camões” open-air amphitheater, in the beautiful “Quinta das Lágrimas” Gardens, hosted the first edition of the “Festival das Artes”: a summer festival focusing on classical music that became a national and international reference within the scope of outdoor summer festivals, promoting the city of Coimbra and the Central Region of Portugal.
On the other side of the Mondego River, on the right bank, since 2012, the mythical “Escadas do Quebra Costas” “Back-breaking” Stairs, located in the historic center of the city, has been the stage for the also renowned Quebra Jazz Summer Festival: it’s there, since then, that all weekends during the summer, the best national Jazz musicians perform in and for the city.
On the 25th of July 2019, at the invitation of the “Festival das Artes”, Quebra Jazz holds the first official concert outside “Escadas Quebra Costas” and, a second, on the 5th of September 2020. The success of both Concerts and the difficulties that were experienced at the time due to the restrictions imposed by the Pandemic, led to this co-production of QuebraJazz and the “Festival das Artes” taking on a new and greater dimension that resulted in the union of the two festivals, the “Festival das Artes Quebra Jazz”.
Thus, since 2021, Coimbra has been the stage for this incredible festival that combines classical music and jazz: during the month of July, concerts take place at “Colina de Camões” and in August at “Escadas do Quebra Costas”.
