The new Congress and Cultural Centre of the City
The Saint Francis Convent, situated on the left side of Mondego River, erected in the XVII Century, worked as a wool factory between 1888 and 1980. In 1995, Coimbra municipality bought the building. After plenty of renovation works Saint Francis Convent openned its doors to the public on the 8th of April and intends to be the cultural centre of the city and to receive big international and Portuguese personalities, attracting not only people from the city and the region but also from the rest of the country and even abroad. The cultural programming, responsibility of the municipality, will include contemporary circus, electronic music, pop, rock, cinema, exhibitions, classic music and contemporary dance and others. Offering the best equipment with high technology, the São Francisco Covent features a set of chambers and auditoriums with capacity for five thousand people in simultaneous. The project is constituted by the old church, the Convent cloisters, a brand new auditorium and several polyvalent rooms. The programing is rich and diverse. June, for example, will be dedicated to the Electronic Music Festival and Digital Visual Arts. It also will be marked by the concert of Benjamim Clementine, the English who was discovered singing in the subway halls, on 3 Of June at 10 p.m.. On the 25th, is Maria Rita, Brazilian singer, daughter of the famous Elis Regina, who will be on stage. The São Francisco Covent with its cultural programming becomes a breath of fresh air for the region.
