The Tower of the Universidade de Coimbra, standing 34 meters high, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. From the tower it is possible to see the Choupal and Lapa, the Rainha Santa e Santa Clara bridges, the Pedro e Inês pedestrian bridge, the Santa Clara a Velha Monastery, Portugal dos Pequenitos, Quinta das Lágrimas, Sé Velha, Machado de Castro Museum, Law School courtyard and the D.Dinis statue. The University of Coimbra Tower was one of the first European university towers. Baroque style, it was edified between 1728 and 1733 and designed by the arquithect António Caneveri. Besides the weather, the clock communicates the time using its bells and the academic life was always guided by them. The current clock is from 1866-67, which has replaced the one that has exercised previously. About the bells, the most famous of the four is that one which faces the Mondego River and it’s known as a Cabra (the goat). Even today, the bells still gathers the academic community for the solemn acts and announces, in funereal tone, the death of a professor at the Academy.
